Kalapana
Tours

Kalapana is a former fishing village and residential area on the Big Island of Hawaii that was partially destroyed by the KÄ«lauea volcano in 1990:

Key points about Kalapana:

  • Location: Kalapana is in the Puna district on the southeast side of the island, 32 miles south of Hilo.

  • History: Kalapana was once a beautiful town with secluded beaches, warm natural pools, and tropical plants.

  • Destruction: In 1990, lava from the KÄ«lauea volcano destroyed most of the town, including 182 homes, the famous black sand beach at KaimÅ«, and several miles of public highway.

  • Recovery: Some people returned to Kalapana and built new houses, but there are still no utilities and the roads are poor.

  • Attractions: Visitors can see the lava at the Kalapana lava viewing site, which is located at the end of Highway 130 in Puna. The viewing area is normally open daily from 3 to 9 p.m.

  • Getting there: The most scenic way to arrive in Kalapana is via the Kapoho Kalapana Road, also known as the Red Road.

  • Nearby restaurants: Some good places to eat in Pahoa include Kaleo's, Ning's, Luquin's, Pele's Kitchen, and Island Natural Market and Deli.
